Following Edge

Nothing's happened in this blog the last few days, because I've been working literally day and night (until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning most days) on the impossible project I'm doing with Keith, as well as my normal work and time with Lauren. (I think I'm going to have to start writing smaller blurbs here instead of big ideas so that I can keep things more up-to-date.)

I reached a significant milestone in my portion of the project (called the "bindings controller", but not related in any way to bondage, except being bound to my work, I suppose) and I figured that milestone will allow me to take a break from it for a day or two without having Keith waiting on me too much.

So, when I got a call from Barb, a co-worker who also works from home and who lives in Eugene, about serious trouble on her work computer, I was happy to drop by tonight with my daughter Lauren to see how I could help. Lauren and I have previously visited with Barb and her granddaughter Hailie for work and play, but since Barb's son-in-law (Hailie's father) has recently been very sick, their very busy schedule hasn't allowed us to get together much. So, tonight, I enjoyed catching up with Barb, Lauren got to visit with Hailie, and I was able to fix Barb's computer trouble. A real pleasure all around.

Of course, the issue is... I guess it was still technically work, so my "break" had not really started, even though it felt like it. I think that happens to me quite often. Because of my personal interest in technical things, it's often very hard to know what things are work that I happen to enjoy and which things are hobbies that happen to accomplish something for the company. Scary if you let it take over the rest of your life, but I don't think it does (aside from recent lack of sleep) and I appreciate having a job that feels like recreation.
